DOG walkers can now see clearly which part of Dovercourt beach is open to their pets.
New Tendring Council signs have gone up on the beach near the old lighthouse and Wimbourne House, confirming dogs are allowed on that stretch. Walkers asked the council to clarify the situation after dog owners complained they were being unfairly criticised for using the beach.
Lynda McWilliams, councillor responsible for the environment, agreed it was a reasonable request and the council had been happy to oblige.
She added: “There were already signs to show where dogs were banned, so it made sense to put up a couple of signs to point out the areas where they were allowed, too.
“We have 36 miles of coastline in Tendring and we want to ensure everyone gets the chance to enjoy them for their various requirements.
“Dogs are not allowed on certain beaches for very good reasons and it is in everyone’s interests this matter is made as clear as possible.”
Aileen Farnell, who called for the signs, is delighted.
She said: “We are very grateful to the council for acting so promptly. Its response has been fantastic.”
Dogs are banned from 11 areas of beach in the district between May 1 and September 30, though guide dogs are exempt. In those areas council dog wardens and seafront wardens patrol and can impose fines of as much as £500.
On all other beaches, dogs are still allowed, but owners are asked to clean up after their pets. A full list of beaches affected can be found at www.tendringdc.gov.uk
