A GIANT screen showing live Olympics events and football matches could be installed in Colchester’s Castle Park.

Council chiefs are looking into whether it is feasible to set up a large screen at the popular park following a suggestion from the town’s pensioners.

Barbara Williamson, chairman of Colchester Pensioners’ Action Group, said the idea had been raised at one of their meetings.

She explained a big screen could help engender more community spirit in the borough.

“It’s a good idea,” she added.

“I first thought of it when the Olympics were on last year and some places had large screens.

“It could be for anything.

“I would have thought some big company sponsorship could fund this type of equipment.”

A consultation has begun into what improvements visitors would like to see made to Castle Park.

Limited funding is available for proposals such as improvements to the boating lake or creating a new park entrance at Duncan’s Gate.

Martin Hunt, Colchester councillor responsible for leisure, said he had instructed officers to look into the possibility.

He added: “I think it’s a good suggestion and it’s one we will certainly seriously look at.

“We have two big events coming up, the World Cup next year, which England should be in, and the Olympics in 2012.

“It’s much better if you can enjoy these things in a crowd rather than sitting at home with a can of lager.”

Questionnaires on Castle Park are available at colchester.gov.uk, the visitor information centre and the customer service centre at Angel Court.
