TOWN councillors want supermarket giant Tesco to come up with a better-looking shopfront for a planned branch in Walton’s conservation area.
Councillors have welcomed plans to reopen the High Street shop as a Tesco Express convenience store. But Frinton and Walton Town Council says the company’s proposals for a new shopfront need a rethink.
Tesco has applied for planning permission to upgrade the shop, which closed in December, with three new air conditioning units, a new shopfront and the town’s first 24-hour cash machine.
Christine Turner, who is a district and town councillor, said: “It’s one of the largest buildings in Walton, so it is a shame Tesco hasn’t made more of an effort.
“The town welcomes the arrival of Tesco but we don’t want to spoil the town.”
Tesco has also applied to sell alcohol at the shop between 6am and 11pm.
The council agreed to ask Tendring Council, which has the final say on the plans to press Tesco for a more sympathetic design for the shopfront.
