IF Darwin’s theory of natural selection is true, does it mean there is no God?
The debate rages on.
The compatibility of theology and science form the subject matter of a new play, Re:Design, by Craig Baxter.
It takes the audience back to the start of the debate, dramatising the intimate exchange of letters between Darwin and the devoutly Christian Harvard botanist, Asa Gray.
The characters of Darwin and Gray unfold through the eyes of Jemma, a modern-day artist and film-maker wrestling with the very same issues 150 years on.
Re:Design was commissioned by the Darwin Correspondence Project, University of Cambridge, and funded by the John Templeton Foundation as a way of introducing wider audiences to the letters of Darwin.
Presented prior to touring in America, the engaging play uses personal letters and articles from the Darwin archive to show what he really thought.
It will be at the Mercury Theatre, Colchester, on September 16 and 17 from 7.30pm.
