TWO big swimming events have been cancelled because refurbishment work at a swimming pool has overrun.
Colchester Fire Swim and Phoenix Amateur Swimming Club’s 2009 gala have both been called off because extra work is needed to remove asbestos from the roof at Colchester Leisure World.
The fitness pool at the Cowdray Avenue leisure centre was due to reopen this month, after 12 weeks of work on the roof.
Officials now say it will remain closed until at least October 24 while asbestos found by workmen is removed.
As a result, Colchester firefighters have cancelled the Colchester Fire Swim, on October 3 and 4, an event which raises funds for the Fire Fighters Charity and other good causes.
Steve Kerridge, chairman of the fire swim committee, said: “It was a bit of a blow, as we have been doing this for 27 years and this is only the second time it hasn’t gone ahead.
“We looked around at other pools, but it is such a big event and with only eight weeks notice we knew we wouldn’t find anywhere else.”
Mr Kerridge said organisers were hoping to reorganise the swim when the pool did reopen. His committee was writing to competitors and sponsors to keep them informed.
Phoenix Amateur Swimming Club, a charity for disabled swimmers, has also been hit.
Its 2009 open competition was scheduled for October 24 and entry fees are being returned to the 200 swimmers signed up for the event.
Maggie Hargreaves, club secretary and squad manager, said: “It was a very difficult decision, but the pool could not guarantee it would be open by then.
“We couldn’t chance losing a lot of money, as we would have to spend about £1,000 beforehand on entries and administration.
“We are very disappointed, especially for the swimmers, as the gala is one of the pathways to other championships.”
Martin Hunt, Colchester councillor responsible for communications, customers and leisure, said: “It is regrettable these events have had to be cancelled. However, we do need to complete the roof so our customers can have a safe and enjoyable experience.”
