Regarding the story “Man stabbed cousin in drunken rent row” on Wednesday.
I was very disappointed by the Gazette’s reporting of the above.
Why did the reporter feel the need to start the report “A Polish man...”?
Surely it is irrelevant what nationality the offender was – suffice to say he was convicted?
I strongly believe this type of reporting just breeds xenophobia and is extremely unhelpful in a multiracial society.

Editor’s note: A key part of Mr Gontarz’s mitigation was that he had been in employment since his arrival two years ago, and it needed to be explained that he is from Poland.
