VULNERABLE young adults were taught discipline and fitness during a martial arts session.

Nacro, a crime prevention charity, asked the SD School of Martial Arts, at East Gates, Colchester, to stage the confidence-building day for 16 to 18-year-olds.

Participant Lloyd Kyzer, 17, said: “It was enjoyable, but very useful at the same time. I’m hoping to join the Army, so I found the fitness and discipline part interesting.”

Lisa Ansell, from Nacro, said: “This programme is designed to help vulnerable young adults prepare for work.

“We wanted a day which would help build their self-esteem and confidence, as well as help with their fitness and discipline.

“If the day proves a success, we would love to make it a permanent feature of the programme.”

Chief instructor Sean Doyland said: “Some people want to gain fitness, some want to build confidence, others want to learn how to defend themselves. What we offer is multi-faceted. We are delighted to have been able to help.”
