THE number of roads gritted across Essex will have to be reduced because of new government rules.

Essex County Council’s fleet of 65 winter gritting lorries will scale back their operation after the Department For Transport announced it was taking control of grit deliveries from salt mines to local authorities across the country.

The move is to ensure counties with the most snow get as much grit as they need.
