Concerns that patients' medical records could be accessed because of the Freedom of Information Act were allayed at a meeting of Colchester Primary Care Trust (PCT).
Chairman Maggie Shackell asked whether the new act meant solicitors would be able to see confidential medical notes if they asked for them.
But Chuda Karki, learning disabilities medical director, reassured her: "The Data Protection Act hasn't been thrown out there are safeguards."
