Speaking to the Gazette following his move to promotion-chasing Hull City, he has paid tribute to the club that developed him into one of the top strikers in Coca-Cola League One.
He said: "I believe Colchester were the perfect club for me to get my start and I thank them for all their help in developing me as a player.
"The fans and the people behind the scenes have been great to me and made it easy to get on with playing my football since I joined them."
Fagan came to Colchester on loan from Premiership side Birmingham City at the start of the 2003/2004 season.
His loan was extended and then he signed a contract that was due to expire at the end of the current campaign.
Fagan added: "I would recommend any young player looking to get his first start to go to Colchester. If they have the right attitude they can excel in a place like that."
