More than 1,500 pupils at a Clacton school had an extra day's holiday after part of the site was left without heating.
It was the second time this year Colbayns High School has been forced to close down on the first day back from a break. A power failure in January meant the new term started late.
Headteacher Nick Pavitt said he managed to get information on the latest problem out to most pupils and parents, despite only learning about the situation at about 8am yesterday.
"Fortunately only a few of our youngsters actually turned out and were not aware of the situation, and they were turned away by staff," he said.
