A legal bill of more than £75,000 will have to be paid by Colchester Primary Care Trust (PCT) because of allegations against a town doctor.

Dr Tony Chyc, of the Hawthorn Surgery, Tamarisk Way, Colchester, was suspended by the General Medical Council (GMC) last year after complaints were made against him by female patients.

The order against Dr Chyc was not a finding of fact, but a measure to protect the public while investigations were carried out.

A subsequent High Court bid by the GMC saw Dr Chyc's suspension extended to January 20, 2006.

A Colchester Primary Care Trust (PCT) spokesman said the PCT had incurred substantial legal costs in opposing Dr Chyc's appeal over the last 18 months.

"Colchester PCT is confident that this expenditure was entirely necessary to protect the safety and best interests of patients, to ensure that the correct procedures and protocols were followed and to preserve the quality of care."

Dr Chyc has worked in Colchester since 1997 and disputes the allegations made against him.
