Julie Alderton left her car on the road because she feared she might need it to get to hospital. She is currently in remission, having suffered from cancer of the stomach lining for the past two years.
Yesterday she woke to discover thieves had ripped off the number plate, bumper and even the lights.
"It has caused about £1,000 damage and I can't use it until the work has been done," she said.
"It is just I am ill and I need my car at the moment more than ever," she said.
Mrs Alderton, of St Saviour Close, St John's, Colchester, said vandalism and petty theft was becoming a problem in the area.
