Doug Bell spent four days in hospital having suffered a dislocated shoulder, fractured cheekbone and severe bruising in the attack, which took place near to Colchester Leisure World.
He is now recovering at the home of his daughter, Janet Morris, who has made an emotive appeal for help in catching those responsible.
Mrs Morris, said: "I think it is disgusting someone could pick on such a vulnerable person. It is very worrying they are still out there.
"They are probably getting braver and braver at what they do. The next time it happens they could end up killing someone."
Mr Bell's granddaughter, Sally, urged anyone who may have witnessed the attack to contact the police adding: "The next time it could be your grandfather or family member."
Despite being hit over the head, and kicked and beaten while on the ground, Mr Bell, who is 82 today, managed to deliberately give the muggers a wrong Pin number for the bank cards they stole.
The attack took place February 10, between 6.30pm and 7pm, in an overflow car park for Leisure World and Megabowl in Cowdray Avenue.
Anyone with information should contact Colchester police on 01206 762212 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111
