Children are being urged to turn out and vote at the forthcoming elections.
Primary schools are being invited to hold mock elections in the run-up to the Essex County Council elections in May.
Laura Bruni, Labour's Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Colchester, wrote to the schools suggesting the idea of primary elections.
She said: "Mock elections can be great fun, but reinforce a serious message about the necessity and value of democracy."
