Supporters and opposers of a controversial development in Abberton will have to wait another five weeks until the final verdict is revealed.
A planning appeal closed on Thursday after two days of debate over Colchester Council's refusal to allow houses to be built on the village's cricket ground and the relocation of the sports club to a plot of farmland.
The application was put together by Abberton and District Cricket Club and developers Westbury Homes, formerly Prowting Homes, but was shelved by councillors last May.
It will be several weeks before planning inspector David Cullingford announces his decision.
More than 200 people signed a petition against the scheme, claiming it was unnecessary and would be detrimental to the tiny village.
Ray Ricks, consultant to developers Westbury Homes, argued the plans were "wholly appropriate".
He said: "According to the local plan Abberton is a principal village and there is scope to expand."
