A Colchester Council spokesman said at 7.15am today gritting crews had been out "most of the night", after last night's snow froze hard to create treacherous road conditions across the borough.
He said: "The roads are not so bad now. We have not been down side-roads, where the buses don't go, but the main ones are clear."
Forecasters expect the snow to melt away by mid-morning as temperatures rise slightly and rain starts to fall.
