A driving instructor admitted having more than 1,000 indecent images of children on his computer.

Michael Shelton put some of the photos on to a DVD at the home he shares with his elderly mother in Bois Hall Garden, Halstead, a court heard.

The rest were split between his computer hard-drive, a CD and various floppy discs.

Out of the 1,059 images, 768 were of level one seriousness, 246 were level two, 40 were level three and five were level four, which shows penetrative sexual activity between children and adults.

Paul Roach, prosecuting at Colchester Magistrates' Court, said police searched Shelton's house under section 41 of the Protection of Children Act after learning he used his credit card on a child pornography site.

The hi-tech crime unit then explored the 36-year-old's computer and belongings and found the images, he added.

Shelton admitted 22 charges of making and possessing indecent photos and images of children when he appeared at court yesterday.

Magistrates said they did not feel their maximum sentencing powers of six months imprisonment were enough and released him on unconditional bail until he is sentenced at Chelmsford Crown Court on March 31.
