Residents-only parking in Witham is to be reviewed after complaints that the scheme is being abused.

Council bosses have been forced to act after some permit-holders living in the town centre claimed they cannot park near their homes because people living further out are using the spaces while at work or shopping.

In most larger towns residents' parking permits can only be used in the zone where the car owner lives.

But because Witham only has one zone, anyone with a parking permit can park anywhere in the town.

Town and district councillor Michael Lager said he had been contacted by residents in Guithavon Street, close to the town centre, who claimed they were often unable to park near their homes.

A Braintree Council spokesman said: "A review of residents-only parking in Witham is planned for this year.

"This is mainly to consider expanding the scheme, but careful consideration will also be given to zoning and time restrictions.
