A newly-resurfaced stretch of the A12 has sparked safety fears after motorists were warned it could pose a potential skid hazard.

Skid warning signs have gone up on the A12 between Feering and Marks Tey following resurfacing work last year.

Workmen used an "ultra thin" top layer material, which reduces road noise and boosts drainage.

But a film which covers the road surface can reduce tyre grip until it wears off after several months. Road grip should return to normal levels once the surface has worn in.

The Highways Agency confirmed the thin surfacing technique had been used when the A12 was repaired last year, but it defended the method.

A spokesman said: "It doesn't mean the roads surface is unsafe - it is still safer than before the work was done."
