Firefighters were called out to tackle a blaze which wrecked a butcher's shop outbuilding.
Crews from Colchester fire station were called to the building, used for smoking bacon, in High Street, Dedham, at about 5.30pm yesterday.
They were on the scene for about two hours, using breathing apparatus as they put out the flames with hosereel jets.
A brigade spokesman said the cause of the fire was not known but it may have been started by an electrical fault.
