Police were called after a shopper was hit over the head - with a saucepan.
The victim was in Woolworths in Culver Square, Colchester, when the attack happened, leaving him with a suspected broken nose.
A police spokesman said staff reported the incident but when an officer got to the shop the injured man refused to co-operate and did not want medical help.
The spokesman asked anyone who knew who was responsible for the attack to come forward by calling the town's police station on 01206 762212.
He said a suspect was described as 17 to 19 years old, 5ft 7ins tall with a shaven head and stubble.
