Well-behaved pupils acted as book buyers for the day as part of a pupil reward scheme.
Youngsters at Tabor Science College in Braintree who had made good use of the library resource centre or homework club were taken to Waterstones bookshop in Chelmsford and told to spend up to £80 each on books.
Deputy headteacher Janey Avery said 12 pupils were taken on the trip coming back with armfuls of books.
Headteacher Steven Clark said the scheme was just one of many reward schemes at the school.
