A section of the Flitch Way running from Braintree to Rayne will be closed to the public for safety reasons until April.
Work on the 3.5km Braintree Station to Warner Close, Rayne section begins today and will include improvements to drainage, surfacing and the signage.
The project has been made possible by a grant of £250,000 from Sustrans as part of its link to schools programme funded by the Department for Transport.
The Flitch Way forms part of the National Cycleway Network, linking other parts of the network from Witham to Stansted.
