Police are concerned for the welfare of a motorist who fled the scene of a crash.
Officers believe the unidentified driver might have sustained head injuries in the two-car collision at Great Totham.
Emergency crews were alerted by a passer-by to the accident in Maldon Road at about 9.30pm last night.
They found a 47-year-old Clacton woman in a Vauxhall Vectra car, who was treated for slight back injuries.
But the other vehicle involved, a Vauxhall Cavalier, was empty.
Marks on the windscreen indicated the person behind the wheel had hit their head, but there was no trace of the car's occupant.
