More than 1,000 pensioners across Tendring are in for a cash windfall which could amount to several hundred pounds each.
The money has been identifed in unclaimed council tax discounts.
The discovery that about 1,500 pensioners have not taken up the chance to get the money back came about due to investigations carried out by Tendring Council's benefits and revenues department.
Portfolio holder Pierre Oxley said the department had been matching up information with the Government's pensions department. Mr Oxley said none of those set to receive the bonus have to do anything to get it.
"The department is to write to each one of them individually and they will not have to contact us to make a claim," added Mr Oxley.
