Motorists were today warned to brace themselves for further snow showers after south Essex woke up to a winter wonderland.

There were several short sharp snow storms across the region, during yesterday afternoon and evening but it did not settle enough to build a decent snowman or go sledging.

Met Office weather forecaster Colin McAllister warned that sub-zero temperatures are likely until Friday, with strong easterly winds worsening the chill.

More snow is expected during this time. He added: "It is likely to be short showers, rather than persistent heavy downfalls.

"There is more chance of the snow settling if it falls overnight, when it is much colder."
