Police in Tendring have warned against doorstep antique dealers.
The "dealers" have been offering large amounts for seemingly valueless property as well as asking for a glass of water.
And, while no reports of burglaries have been received yet, there are concerns.
One antique dealer was asked to come in for a cup of tea and later a large quantity of jewellery was found missing.
"I am not saying that all of these dealers are thieves but you should be very careful who you let in to your home," said crime prevention officer Calvin Heal.
"Even if these people are genuine, dealers will they offer you the same for your valuables as a trusted local dealer?"
