A young girl was thrown through the window of a car and on to the roadside as it rolled over in Thorrington.
The 12-year-old, of Dedham, was last night in a stable condition at London's Great Ormond Street Hospital.
Police are now investigating whether the youngster and the other passengers of the red Citroen Saxo were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash on Friday night.
The car, driven by a 17-year-old male and travelling towards Frating, left the B1029 Brightlingsea Road at about 7.30pm.
The driver and two other passengers, a male and female both aged 13, suffered injuries, including a broken collarbone and nose. A section of the road was closed for an hour.
