Alex Campbell, of Thorpe Road, Kirby Cross, was left tetraplegic and wheelchair-bound following the accident three years ago in which he was a passenger

As a result of his spinal cord injury, he is dependent on a team of carers to look after him.

The sum has been agreed in an out-of-court settlement with the insurers of the driver.

It has been paid to a trust to which Mr Campbell has no direct access.

About half the £5 million will meet the likely cost of his future care needs, and the rest will be spent on adaptations to his home, medical treatments, disability aids and equipment, additional holiday costs and to cover his loss of earnings.
