Bad weather caused traffic chaos in north Essex.
There were tailbacks on the A12 after collisions left motorists in ever-lengthening queues.
Police issued a weather warning as heavy sleet hit the county's roads and some motorists failed to adjust their driving accordingly.
A Stanway traffic police spokesman said: "The traffic congestion had been due to broken-down vehicles.
"And numerous people were not paying attention, causing even more chaos and increasing the tailbacks, which meant there were more people stuck on the roads in the snow."
He added the trouble was concentrated around the Kelvedon bypass section of the A12 yesterday afternoon.
A five-car collision at the northbound Marks Tey junction kicked off the trouble. There were only minor injuries.
A red Rover 214 car was then involved in a two-vehicle collision on the southbound track at Kelvedon.
A further two-car collision took place, meaning motorists were stuck in tailbacks of more than three miles.
