A man threatened to slash police officers after he was spotted banging his head against a shop window.
CCTV cameras caught John Barrett hitting his head outside Henley's club in St Botolph's Street, Colchester, on December 19 last year.
Police said there was a danger he would smash the window and hurt himself.
Jonathan Reynolds, prosecuting, said: "They approached him but he continued. The defendant said, 'I've got a knife and I'll slash you'."
Barrett, 29, later told police he was a 'little bit drunk' and had been messing around with pals.
Barrett, of Finchingfield Way, Monkwick, said he had an alcohol problem. He told Colchester magistrates: "I can't remember much about the offence or what happened that night."
He was given a 12-month rehabilitation order after admitting threatening and abusive behaviour.
