Cricket fanatic George Scoble, whose dedication to his beloved Wickford club saw him buy a house backing onto their Patmore Memorial Ground home, has died at the age of 70.
George was a club stalwart for four decades, playing 1,172 matches for Wickford, mostly for the Saturday first team, in which the opening batsman scored 21,036 runs.
During that spell he held the club high-scoring record of 162 and totalled five 100s and 94 50s in a career that spanned 35 years from 1965.
George, who passed away after a lengthy spell battling serious illness, worked in the paint industry throughout his working life and leaves a wife, daughter and son Chris, himself a well-known Wickford cricketer.
Apart from the playing side, George had served Wickford in several administrative posts on the committee.
He was delighted to see the club regain their place in the Premier Division of the Shepherd Neame Essex League at the end of last season.
The funeral service will take place at Southend Crematorium next Monday (February 28) at 10.40am.
Those wishing to pay tribute to George can send flowers, but donations to Cancer Research would be equally appreciated.
