Police are investigating after workers took £650 for a guttering job but did not return to finish it.
It was reported by a householder in St Monance Way in St John's, Colchester. A police spokesman said workers called at the home and offered to do work on the fascias and guttering.
He said they agreed a deal and after the existing gutters had been removed, the householder handed over £650 as a deposit.
But the workers left and did not return. After trying for a week to get in touch with them by phone, the resident reported it to Colchester police.
The police spokesman advised people who needed work done on their homes to consider companies recommended by friends or family.
