A village shop's plans to protect itself from ram raiders have been unanimously approved by Colchester councillors.

The Co-op in High Street, Dedham, was targeted by crooks twice last year and on both occasions a four-wheel drive vehicle smashed into the building in unsuccessful attempts to steal the cash machine inside.

Colchester Council's planning committee had been advised to turn down the plans for concrete bollards outside the shop to stop it happening again.

But they decided to overturn the recommendation, giving approval to the proposals at a meeting last night.
