Danny Hunt has been lined up to face unbeaten Scotsman Dave Stewart in his next pro fight.
The Leigh lightweight had hoped to have a crack at the British title but has been told he must fight another eliminator first.
But the English champion knows if he can beat Stewart then it will pave the way for an attempt for the British belt.
"Stewart is six feet tall so I will have to get inside his reach," said Hunt.
"Hopefully I'll beat him and then obviously after that I'll get a title shot for the British."
Twenty-nine-year-old Stewart, who fights out of Ayr, has had 14 fights and won them all, four ending in knockouts.
Hunt and Stewart are among a quartet of boxers aiming for a crack at the British title. The other two are Liverpool's David Burke and Salford's Lee Meager.
