Ambitious plans for Southend Pier including two new pavilions and a spectacular gyrotower or rollercoaster have won the backing of senior councillors.

The Riviera Group wants to transfer its failed proposals for Bournemouth Pier to breathe new life into Southend's greatest landmark.

Council leader Howard Briggs said the multi-million pound development would include impressive new buildings on the old AMF platform at the shore end and the pier head.

Andy Price, chief executive of the Bournemouth-based Riviera Group said he had "full financial backing" for his proposals which were analysed by top-flight consultants Deloitte and Touche.

Meanwhile, Fran McGinty, who runs McGinty's bar and pavilion on the pier, said he was disappointed at being rejected by the council with his blueprint.

The scheme would have included a new top-class restaurant and monorail from the pier to the proposed restaurant.

A new pier museum and a showcase for Prittlewell's Saxon king was also suggested as part of the scheme.

Southend Council's scrutiny committees will now look at the proposal and all other bids after it was considered by the cabinet.
