A man jailed for a 'long string of violent offences' had to be dragged down to the cells by court security officers.

John Tring, 22, begged: "Mum, do something - please do something," after he was sentenced to two months in prison by Chelmsford magistrates.

His family sobbed as he was taken from the courtroom yesterday. The court heard there had been a series of incidents between last September and January.

Tring, of Newland Street, Witham, spat in the face of Amanda Robinson in a bid to provoke a fight with her boyfriend, Jason Royle.

There was also an 'altercation' between Tring and Mr Royle at Tesco supermarket.

In a separate incident, Tring attacked Mr Royle and poked him in the eye. He also smashed a glass door at HTS Recruitment in Maldon Road after a dispute over wages, the court heard.

And there were further incidents at council offices and his girlfriend's.

Tring admitted a series of offences, including common assault, threatening behaviour, theft and criminal damage.

Steven Levy, mitigating, said Tring had a history of drug abuse and 'anger management issues', but was 'extremely remorseful'.

Sentencing Tring to two months in prison, magistrates told him: "You have a long string of persistent offences over a considerable period of time involving violence."
