West Ham reached the quarter-finals of the FA Youth Cup for the third year running, but they were pushed hard by a dogged Leyton Orient side.
In the end, a burst of first-half quality told for the hosts, who recovered from the shock of conceding a first-minute goal to progress 3-2 to a home clash with Southampton.
"I was really pleased with that first-half performance," said academy boss Tony Carr.
"We showed some real quality, cut them open and passed it around nicely.
"We looked capable of getting a fourth goal and that might have killed off their enthusiasm."
