Paid parish rangers could be introduced to clamp down on trouble in parts of the Braintree district.
Wendy Scattergood, Braintree Council's cabinet member for planning and rural issues, said that rangers could be created in ten areas around Braintree in the next year.
They would work during the evenings and providing back-up for police and community support officers.
The proposal is part of a package of improvements for 2005/06 which are due to be considered in detail at a meeting of the full council today.
