Pedestrianisation in Maldon town centre would cause a major problem but a one-way street could be the answer, it has been claimed.
Murray Foster, Maldon town centre manager, gave a speech to Maldon Town Council on Monday night and explained the problem of pedestrianising the town centre.
He told members of the council that if traffic is prevented from travelling down Maldon High Street, the businesses at the upper end of the street would have a problem due to the lack of opportunity for people to see that they are there.
"I understand that having two-way traffic travelling up and down the High Street is not environmentally-friendly but some form of traffic flow needs to be sustained.
"The High Street is linear and is a main access route through Maldon, so maybe a one-way street could be the answer," he said.
He indicated the roadworks in the town centre, which have been affecting traders badly and are not due to be finished until late March, were progressing well.
