The new shop was officially opened by Colin Barrett, president of the Colchester and East Essex Society, who, surrounded by heart-shaped balloons, cut the ribbon.
Mr Barrett also handed over a £100 cheque to the winner of the Design a Valentine's Day Card competition, which had been running for pupils of Heathlands Primary School, in West Bergholt.
The new air-conditioned store, which is treble the size of the original adjacent Co-op store, includes new staff facilities, a post office and a much greater range of products.
