Val Lewis has stepped down from her job as a district nurse attached to the Blandford House surgery in London Road, Braintree.
She has worked in Braintree for the past 25 years and was recently the district nurse team co-ordinator for the town.
Her role involved visiting patients in their homes, to enable as many as possible to stay at home while being treated rather than being admitted to hospital.
Mrs Lewis said she was looking forward to a relaxing holiday before deciding what to do with her new-found leisure time.
