A Tory MP has demanded an urgent inquiry after a leaked document revealed radioactive materials were tested at Shoebury's military ranges in the 1940s and 1950s.
Sir Teddy Taylor has asked the Ministry of Defence to clarify the exact nature of the tests which may have led to some radioactive contamination.
The leaked MoD document marked "internal distribution only" said drains, land and buildings could have been affected.
Sir Teddy has asked the MoD to carry out a review of radioactivity levels in the area and report back to him as soon as possible.
He said: "There have been a number of similar assertions in recent years and all of them, including reviews of health problems in the area, have not produced any worrying results of any sort.
"In view of this latest allegation about tests carried out some 50 years ago, I think the department should tell us what tests actually took place and if there is any evidence of any remaining hazards.
"It would be helpful and reassuring to local residents if the full facts could be clarified."
Meanwhile Thanet MP Roger Gale and campaigners in Kent have called for the Shoeburyness site to be shut down.
The Ministry of Defence said all risks to local people were very small.
The MoD has never revealed details of tests which took place at the weapons testing base which stretches from Shoebury up to Foulness.
