Two men have been jailed for what a judge described as "orgies of wanton vandalism."

A court heard how more than 70 cars in and around Colchester had wing mirrors ripped off and windscreens smashed by the pair.

They endangered the life of an off-duty police officer, Sarah Groves, by smashing a stone through her window as she was driving to work, Chelmsford Crown Court was told.

Simon Field, 26, and 18-year-old Robin Brown caused damage to vehicles worth more than £13,000, the court heard.

Field, of London Road, Stanway, and Brown, of Lexden Road, West Bergholt, admitted three charges of criminal damage and one of reckless criminal damage endangering the life of an off-duty police officer.

Field also asked for 70 similar offences to be considered and Brown asked for 56 similar matters.

Simon Spence, mitigating, said their behaviour was the kind expected to come from "naive and immature young men".

Judge Ball said he felt Field was the "main mover" of the offences and had committed them after taking a cocktail of drink and drugs. He was jailed for a total of 18 months. Brown was sent to a young offenders' institution for a total of nine months.

The judge told the pair they had engaged in a spree of "wanton vandalism".
