Firefighters had to rescue two people who were stranded by high tide on The Strood in the early hours of Sunday.
The man and a woman were caught by the rising sea level as they tried to drive across to Mersea in a Ford Escort car.
Four fire crews, including the rescue tender from Colchester station and the Mersea lifeboat, were called out.
Leading firefighter Jerry Tuckwell urged drivers to take care when driving to and from Mersea Island on The Strood.
