Efforts to find Eastwood resident Walter Routh have failed to find the missing pensioner despite a week-long search by police, friends and family.

Mr Routh, 65, of Rowan Walk, went missing when he visited the toilets at the Cliffs Pavilion, in Station Road, Westcliff, on Sunday, February 6.

He was last seen walking along Limburg Toad, in Canvey, at 9am on Tuesday. Mr Routh's favourite hat - a blue baseball cap with a Union Flag emblem - was found by a relative in a gutter in Dyke Crescent, Canvey, the same morning.

But there has been no sign of Mr Routh who suffers from Alzheimer's Disease, despite a search of the island which involved 70 police officers and volunteers, including a team from Essex Lowland Rescue.

The coastguard has helped with a search of the coastline and Essex Police's helicopter used thermal imaging equipment to look for Mr Routh, who is known to friends and family as Wally.

Posters featuring a photo of the missing man have gone up across Southend but this morning (Monday) police were planning to put up more across Canvey, in the hope it will jog someone's memory and help them find him.

Mr Routh was last seen wearing a dark knee-length jacket, brown walking boots and blue jeans. He is 5ft 10ins tall and has dark hair with flecks of grey.

Anyone with information should call Southend police on 01702 431212.
