A man is to receive £1,000 after he was attacked in a Colchester pub.

Shaun Green tried to stop a teenager from getting a pool cue to use in a fight but ended up being assaulted.

A court heard how he was left semi-conscious on the floor of the Brewers Arms pub in St John's Street after the attack in May last year. His injuries included bites to his back, Chelmsford Crown Court heard.

Mr Green's attackers, Nathan Sutcliffe, 21, and a 17-year-old youth, were told to pay him £500 compensation each after they admitted causing him actual bodily harm. The two were also given punishment orders when they appeared in court for sentence.

Stephen Rose, prosecuting, said Mr Green had spent most of May 31 last year, a bank holiday, socialising in the Brewers Arms.

During the evening Sutcliffe, a groundworker, of Ventura Drive, Colchester, and the 17-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, both went outside as there appeared to be some sort of disturbance.

Sutcliffe told police after his arrest he remembered little of the incident as he had drunk a whole case of Stella Artois lager since 10am that day, a total of 24 cans.

The teenager said he had been drinking as well and denied the assault.

Mark Roochove, mitigating for Sutcliffe, said he was so inebriated that day that he could not recall what took place.

Sutcliffe was given a 160-hour punishment order, with £500 compensation for Mr Green.

The teenger received a 100-hour punishment order and an 18-month rehabilitation order with a condition he attends an "aggression replacement" training course. He was also told to pay Mr Green £500 compensation.
