A search for a north Essex climber reported missing on Ben Nevis has been suspended with no sign of the man.

An RAF helicopter started looking for the 39-year-old, named as Gavin Nightingale from Colchester, when he was reported overdue on Saturday after heading up the mountain on Friday.

More than 60 rescue team members, some with dogs, were taking part in the search yesterday.

But poor weather and the risk of avalanche forced them to postpone efforts. Mr Nightingale is experienced and well-equipped.

John Stevenson, the deputy leader of Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team, said there was a "possible sighting" of the man on Saturday morning.

"But after two full days missing on the Ben, things are looking bleak," he added.
