Darren Swash will be going for gold when he competes at the 2005 CP/ISRA World Championships in Cannecticut, America.

The 21-year-old who has cerebral palsy and trains and competes with Colchester Phoenix Amateur Swimming Club has been selected as part of the 130-strong English/Welsh team.

They will be competing in a range of events at the prestigious event in America from July 2 to 12.

Swash, a lifeguard at Colchester Leisure World and also Phoenix's squad captain, has stepped up his gruelling training schedule in the pool and in the gym in a bid to bring home at least one gold.

He will be competing in the 50 metres and 100m freestyle and the 100m individual medley. He will also be competing in the English/Welsh squad's relay team events.

In between working and training, Swash is busy trying to raise sponsorship to assist with the cost of competing at the championships. To secure his place in the team, he has got to raise £1,500 by June.
